“Jericho” convention returning to Oakley, KS: May 23-26, 2008
“JERICHO” is a TV program that takes place in the aftermath of a multi-city nuclear attack on the U.S. by unknown enemies. The story centers around Jericho, a small town in western Kansas, and how its citizens survive in the post-apocalyptic world. Premiering on CBS in September of 2006, JERICHO's fast-paced action, quality writing and excellent characterizations appealed to people from all walks of life. When it was canceled in May 2007, thousands of JERICHO fans united in a historic campaign to bring the show back, sending over 20 tons of nuts to CBS studios. After just three weeks, CBS reversed its decision and gave JERICHO a 2nd season that begins airing February 12, 2008.
The first JERICHON was held September 14-16, 2007, when nearly 100 JERICHO fans visited Oakley, KS to celebrate the TV show's return. Oakley was chosen because it is the closest "real world" counterpart to the fictional Jericho, being the only town in western Kansas where highways I-70, 40 and 83 intersect. This year will see even more JERICHO fans coming to Oakley for JERICHON 2008. The gathering will be held on Memorial Day weekend, starting Friday, May23rd and running through Monday, May 26th. From all indications, JERICHON 2008 should be even bigger than last year!
JERICHON 2008 gives a nod of thanks to the crew who worked long and hard to bring us this quality television program. This year’s Guest of Honor is Mr. Mike Loomer, the On-Set Dresser for both season 1 and 2 of JERICHO. Loomer, as he likes to be called, is looking forward to JERICHON and visiting Oakley. He plans to bring props and costumes from the TV show, including prop weapons used by the actors during filming. Also, BlogTalkRadio’s Shaun Daily returns as a guest this year and plans to broadcast live from the convention again. Other JERICHO cast and crew members have expressed interest in coming to JERICHON 2008. Announcements will be made when we have confirmation of their attendance.
Planned activities for the 2008 convention include talks by Mike Loomer about his job on the set and stories about filming the series. Other panels are educational in nature, with experts speaking on disaster preparedness, alternative energy sources, and demonstrations of various energy-saving devices. Of course, there are the usual discussions about JERICHO, as well as costumes and props on display. We hope to once again offer tours of Monument Rocks, Keystone Gallery, the Fisk Museum and other local attractions. There are even activities planned for the younger folks, including a coloring contest, and a BBQ will be held on Saturday night (tickets sold separately). Black Jack Fairgrounds (at the main JERICHON venue – The 4-H Building located at 217 Kaler Ave, Oakley) is where residents from the local area are invited to set up booths to sell food, souvenirs or other craft and art pieces. Additional info on convention guests, activities and or vendor space at Black Jack Fairgrounds will be posted on the Guardians of Jericho (GoJ) website.
"The Guardians of Jericho very much want this event to be fun not only for JERICHO fans, but for Oakley residents. We openly invite Oakley's business community, schools and churches to participate by setting up booths in Black Jack Fairgrounds with crafts and food for sale. We'd want to work closely with the Oakley Chamber of Commerce to make JERICHON a TEAM effort where everyone benefits. Thank you, Oakley!" -- Marilyn Morey, Chairperson, Guardians of Jericho
